Senior Leadership Challenge 1

  • 13 day leadership experience
  • Teens in Grade 9
  • Includes a 5 Day Qathet Canoe Trip in Powell river
  • Practical in cabin training experience for 1 shadow day

As the first tier of Camp Summit’s leadership development courses, the SLC 1 program is a transformative two-week experience designed for young people currently in Grade 9. This program is perfect for those eager to explore the wilderness, develop leadership skills, and build hard-skill competencies in an engaging and supportive environment.

The SLC 1 program challenges participants through a series of shared adventures, the highlight being a 5-day Qathet Canoe Route expedition (formerly known as the Powell Forest Canoe Circuit). During this unforgettable trip, participants gain hands-on experience in leadership and teamwork while tackling activities that build essential life skills, including:

  • Effective communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Judgment and decision-making
  • Collaboration and teamwork

Participants play an active role in every aspect of the expedition. From menu planning and food/gear pack-in and out, to campsite selection, setup, and cooking, they take on increasing responsibility while gaining independence and confidence. Over the course of the trip, participants develop vital backcountry skills, such as route navigation using a map and compass, backcountry safety procedures, and the practice of “Leave No Trace” principles to minimize environmental impact.

When not on expedition, SLC 1 participants experience the full range of exciting adventure activities Camp Summit has to offer, including mountain biking, climbing, canoeing, high ropes, and archery. These activities provide opportunities to test their skills, challenge themselves, and deepen their connection with peers and nature.

SLC 1 participants will also spend a day ‘shadowing’ a cabin group, providing them with a valuable opportunity to begin building their leadership and role-modeling skills. By observing and assisting Summit staff, participants gain insight into the responsibilities of being a leader at camp, including engaging with younger campers, supporting activities, and fostering a positive group dynamic. This hands-on experience allows them to practice communication, mentorship, and leadership in a real-world setting, preparing them for future leadership opportunities at camp and beyond.
