Applications for the Leaders in Training Program (LIT) are handled differently than our typical summer camp registrations. Individuals who would like to participate in the LIT program will be able to apply for the program by submitting a personal LIT Application online. LIT applications must be submitted by the applicant themselves and not a family member or guardian.

Our Leadership in Training (LIT) Program is a half-summer leadership course specifically designed for participants in Grade 11 who are eager to embrace new responsibilities and take their camp experience to the next level. This transformative program empowers participants to develop essential leadership skills, practice teaching and facilitation techniques, and learn how to navigate their role as positive role models for youth. These skills are enhanced through direct, hands-on interaction with campers—whether in program areas, on trips, or during the day-to-day experiences of cabin and camp life.

The LIT program emphasizes responsibility, teamwork, and care for the camp community, as participants learn how to create the same camp magic that brought them to Summit as campers. The program also prepares participants for the transition to full-time work by balancing job responsibilities, self-care, and effective time management. Structured in an apprenticeship style, the LIT program represents the shift from being a camper to becoming a counselor. As such, participants must bring a strong desire to work with youth and a commitment to learning and growing as leaders.

How does the program work?

LITs play a vital role in the camp community, working closely with experienced cabin counselors, activity instructors, and site and facility staff. This mentorship model allows participants to shadow, assist, and lead in key areas of camp operations. LITs gain first-hand experience in:

  • Supporting cabin groups of 7–15-year-old campers through their daily camp experience.
  • Assisting activity programs such as mountain biking, rock climbing, archery, and high ropes belaying.
  • Supporting various tasks to learn the ins-and-outs of camp operations.
Leadership Workshops

In addition to their placements, LITs take part in dedicated leadership workshops that focus on program delivery through a self-awareness framework. Led by the LIT Director and other Senior Staff, these workshops explore:

  • Different leadership styles and their impact.
  • Key qualities and characteristics of effective role models.
  • The significance of mentorship and being a positive role model for younger campers.

Workshops combine discussions, activities, and reflection, allowing LITs to gain deeper insight into their own leadership abilities and develop skills they’ll carry forward in camp and beyond.

The Leadership in Training Program provides a well-rounded and immersive experience, giving participants the opportunity to engage in all aspects of camp life. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and leadership development, LITs leave the program with real-world skills, meaningful connections, and the confidence to inspire and guide the next generation of campers. This program is not just about learning to lead—it’s about growing as individuals, contributing to the camp community, and embracing the journey of becoming a future camp leader.
